Can indoor microgreens still grow stably during the scorching Spanish summer?A Spanish urban farm client recently faced this exact challenge. With Southern Europe’s August heatwaves making it nearly impossible to control moisture and quality outdoors, they decided to move their production of pea shoots, radish, and sunflower microgreens indoors. They chose our hydroponic seedling rack system for a pilot project, aiming to supply local restaurants and health food retailers.
Given the rapid water evaporation in summer and the high cost of indoor space, they opted for our 6-layer vertical system. This setup holds up to 24 standard trays and features full-spectrum LED grow lights. This is crucial because it protects delicate seedlings from being scorched by the intense summer sun, providing a perfectly stable environment regardless of the weather outside. Combined with the built-in circulation pump and automated irrigation, the system not only saves labor but also excels in water efficiency—a vital factor during dry Spanish summers.
The results from the first batch were impressive. In just 10 days, the crops were ready. The growth was remarkably uniform, the colors were vibrant, and the texture was crisp—qualities that were immediately praised by local chefs.
The client noted that the system runs quietly and delivers a higher yield per tray than expected. Encouraged by this success, they are already preparing to add more equipment to scale up production for the peak summer season. This approach—starting with a small-scale pilot and expanding based on proven yields—is truly the most reliable way for urban farms to minimize risk while maximizing growth.
