A greenhouse grower in Costa Rica was seeking a more space-efficient, higher-yield method for planting leafy greens suited to the local climate. After thorough comparison, he decided to try our 4-meter Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system for growing high-demand local leafy crops like lettuce, basil, and cilantro.
After clarifying his greenhouse layout, crop types, and yield targets, we configured a complete NFT hydroponic system for him, including: food-grade PVC planting channels, a 100-liter recirculation tank, a fully automated pump system, and 8 channel structures totaling 4 meters in length.
This single NFT hydroponic system provides approximately 12–15 square meters of effective growing area, making it a highly cost-effective investment for greenhouse farmers seeking to boost yield per unit area.
Following the smooth installation of the NFT system, the first crop cycle thrived exceptionally quickly under the local warm, humid climate with stable sunlight. Within just two weeks, the client observed clear advantages over traditional soil cultivation: faster growth rates, more uniform and healthier leaf coloration, superior nutrient uptake, and crisper, more tender produce.
Furthermore, the recirculating water supply structure significantly reduced water consumption and minimized maintenance needs. This aligns perfectly with Costa Rica's demand for water-efficient and high-yield agriculture while lowering greenhouse operational costs.
The client now plans to expand with additional NFT hydroponic systems, gradually transitioning sections of the greenhouse from traditional soil cultivation to hydroponics to enhance overall vegetable yield and quality. This pilot project has further demonstrated the potential of NFT systems for commercial vegetable production, offering new pathways for modern hydroponic agriculture in Costa Rica.
