During the cold Canadian winter, pasture growth can slow down or stop completely, making fresh feed production a challenge for dairy farms. Maintaining a stable supply of nutritious green fodder throughout the year is especially important for livestock farms located in regions with long winters and changing weather conditions.
A Canadian dairy farm was looking for a more reliable feed production solution to reduce dependence on seasonal forage supply and stored feed. Traditional forage production in colder regions often requires large storage capacity for hay and silage, while external feed sourcing can increase transportation costs and supply uncertainty. To improve feed independence, the farm decided to introduce an automated hydroponic fodder growing system for continuous on-site fresh fodder production.
Based on the farm’s livestock scale and daily feed requirements, we recommended a 1500kg/day Hydroponic Fodder Container Farm. This commercial hydroponic fodder system integrates controlled environment agriculture (CEA) technology with automated climate management, including temperature control, humidity regulation, ventilation, and mist irrigation. The controlled growing environment allows seeds to germinate and develop efficiently regardless of outdoor weather conditions, providing stable fresh fodder production throughout the year.
The hydroponic fodder container is designed with multi-layer vertical growing racks to maximize production capacity within a compact footprint. The vertical farming structure improves space utilization while allowing the system to achieve high daily output in a limited area. Automated irrigation and water circulation systems provide precise moisture control, reducing manual operation requirements and helping maintain consistent fodder quality.
With a production capacity of up to 1500kg of fresh hydroponic fodder per day, the system provides a reliable green feed source for commercial dairy cattle operations. Compared with traditional forage production, hydroponic fodder farming requires significantly less land, uses water more efficiently, and offers a much shorter growing cycle. Fresh fodder can be produced continuously on-site, helping farms reduce seasonal feed shortages and improve overall feed management efficiency.
The enclosed container farm environment also helps protect production from extreme weather conditions, making it suitable for livestock farms in cold climates such as Canada. By combining automated growing technology, efficient resource management, and year-round production capability, the hydroponic fodder system provides a practical solution for modern livestock feed production.
